In the upcoming 2025 edition of the Paris Arbitration Week (“PAW“), Rajah & Tann Asia will be hosting the event “Navigating Cross-Cultural Dynamics in International Arbitration” with a distinguished panel of our leading arbitration practitioners.

International arbitration has solidified its role as the preferred mechanism for resolving disputes in cross-border trade and investment. However, the interplay between cultural nuances and legal traditions – particularly between civil law and common law jurisdictions – raises significant questions about fairness and stakeholder trust. Cultural differences may give rise to contrasting approaches such as deference versus directness, hierarchy versus individualism. These differences may play a role throughout proceedings, from business dealings to procedural and hearing stages, and ultimately to the interpretation and perception of justice.

Hosted by Rajah & Tann Singapore speakers Kelvin Poon SC (Deputy Managing Partner and Head, International Arbitration), Tan Chuan Thye SC (Partner, International Arbitration), Dr Vanina Sucharitkul (Partner (Foreign Lawyer), International Arbitration), and Huang Shilin (Foreign Counsel, International Arbitration), the session will explore:

  • the pivotal role of cultural understanding and literacy in navigating cross-border disputes;
  • how cultural and systemic differences influence decision-making, advocacy styles, and stakeholder perceptions of fairness;
  • practical strategies to enhance cultural competency among practitioners, counsels, and arbitrators; and
  • the balance between respecting cultural diversity and ensuring procedural consistency in international arbitration.

PAW is the most attended event for arbitration practitioners around the globe, with over 10,000 practitioners attending 187 events in 2024. It aims to connect the worldwide arbitration community and promote international arbitration as a peaceful means of dispute resolution. In 2025, PAW will run from 7 to 11 April 2025.

The Rajah & Tann Asia event will be held at the Hyatt Paris Madeleine on Wednesday 9 April 2025, 4.30 pm to 7.00 pm (including a cocktail reception). For more information and to register for the event, please click here.
